A Fine Pickle

Verne and Judy DuClos of Gizmo’s Pickled Plus spend all summer pickling cukes and concocting relish from the ever-prolific zucchini. Learn more about them in today’s Times-Argus story, In a Pickle.

This hardworking, creative couple gears up for their picking season around Mother’s Day, when they’ll begin gathering fiddleheads. “Last year we picked 750 pounds and sold out in 30 days,” Verne reports. Look for two varieties in a couple of month: dill and “sassy” (hot).

But they’re never really resting. This time of year, they’re making jam and jelly from berries picked last winter. It’s a lot of work to provide that fresh taste of summer, all winter long!
